Capri RS Race replica
These pages are following my project how to change 1971 Capri GT3000 to a 1972 RS2600 Race replica. The most important goals of this project are to learn mechanics and car technics and hopefully create something extra special in the spirit of seventies. And of course save one genuine GT3000 away from scrap yard.
I can’t remember the exact reason why to start this project, but maybe it was the dream every boy has: to build car with own hands. One sparkle was mk1 Escort in finnish American Car Show 2002 totally build race machine with two liter turbo YB Cosworth engine and top of that street legal. However every boy seem to have mk1 or 2 Escort so I wanted something special.
70’s Racing Capris I have seen in book ”Ford In Touring Car Racing” started to attract me with their wide body kit and twin headlights. In my point of view coupe is also sportier than family Escorts and V6 engine sound so sexy…
Slowly my plans were towards Capri. When there was third kid coming to family, time was suitable to propose wife to get also third vehicle into family. We have tradition that every new kid means new car in into family…
The vision and the goal is to build externally detailed replica of season -72 works RS2600 Capri with wide “Cologne” body kit. On running gear side plans are still open, but as close as possible to original race machine. Base engine will be 3 liter Essex to avoid extra inconveniences in vehicle inspections. Also tuning parts for Essex are better available than for Cologne V6. So far plan A is to make billet aluminum cylinder heads for Essex, plan B is ported stage 3 iron heads.
All part will be gone through, sandplasted and repainted. Moving parts like gaskets, bearings etc. will be replaced with new. On body side old corroded parts will be replaced with plain sheet metal parts, because all original body parts are no longer available or price is astronomical. Old windows will be used except windshield.
Safety devices will be along current standards so if this hobby develops actual racing is also possible. Interior will be removed including backseats and linings. Old meters will be used.
Technical specs seem to develop during the project so bolded items have been realized:
